Annabelle shook her head. Tears continued to stream down her cheeks but they long since cooled down. She sighed, collapsing back into the chair she had sat in. Her head found it's way into her hands.

Annabelle looked slightly up so see the red mark that had formed on his face. Tears fell harder and she let her head drop again.

Annabelle squeezed her eyes shut. Her hands found their way to the zipper on her back and unzipped. They moved away the cloth to reveal long gash marks on her back.

She gulped, swallowing down the last of her tears. In a monotone she replied, "The life of a maid is not easy."

He took her hands. "I'm so sorry. If I ever met them I would..." his voice trailed off and he looked down.

Annabelle removed her hands from his and re-zipped her dress. "It's fine. I was bad." her voice sounded dead.

Annabelle closed her eyes and pointed to where each covered gash scar was. "Not listening. Dropping a tea set. Tripping up the stairs with a mop bucket. Supposed stealing. Not listening again. And dropping silverware."

Annabelle shrunk away from him. "One of the other maids they had. She slapped their child."
