Baby didn't know what she meant. It must have been a person she ate or something. He followed her with laughter, his eyes glowed like candles, lighting the way.

The deeper they went, the darker it got. Melody sincerely wished she had had the foresight to bring a flashlight with her. After a while, she heard a scurrying in the corner; her eyes had adjusted enough for her to see it was a little spider. However, as she aimed and fired, it disappeared through a hole in the wall.

That was close, Aella thought to herself as she heard the bullet explode behind her. She crawled deeper into the wall.

Baby sniffed, sticking his nose near the wall. He narrowed his eyes before teleporting and landing on Melody's shoulder.

Melody liked the feeling of having the protective shadow with her. Deeper she went, but nothing came out.

IC: Baby sat on Melody's head in deep concentration. The use of so much shadow energy was draining him slowly, his kind wasn't supposed to learn such things.

Melody reached an elevator that was out of order. Its doors had been blasted open, their hinges charred. Several limbless corpses lay inside,
"Eugh," she muttered, carefully avoiding it.
Soon, they reached a huge room with hundreds of cubicles lined up. Noises came from left and right, all of them obviously shadows. The instant either Melody or Baby made a noise, there would be a feeding frenzy with little hope of either making it out alive.

Baby took a small breath and suddenly seemed to disappear. At a certain angle you could see a faint black aura.

Melody took in a sharp breath as Baby seemed to become invisible. The nearest shadow, a ghost shadow, looked up from its measly lunch.
Suuuuuuu it hissed, moving towards them. Once it got close enough, Melody extended a foot into its face, hard. It vanished in a puff of dust.

Baby jumped off of Melody and off of the cubicles. He slowly stalked past a shadow he'd never seen before. It came out of the ground and looked at Melody.

Melody didn't want to make any more noise than necessary. She tucked her gun in its holster, then aimed a poorly-placed kick at the new shadow.

The Stalk ducked back into the ground. Baby was getting farther and farther away. Nightcrawlers would slink in and out of the ground along with more Stalk. A stray Valgon flew low, right above the Cubicles.

Melody ducked down as it flew over her head. Shadows were creeping closer, the further Baby got.
"Baby!" she whispered, though it was hardly necessary. "Come back!"

Baby became visible again, but more shadows just like him were running past. He looked dwarfed compared to every other shadow.

Finally, Melody had no choice. She pulled out her Sig Sauer, cocked it, and pulled the trigger--
But nothing happened. She pulled it again, and still nothing but a small click was heard.
"No, no no!" she cried, wacking the side of the weapon.

Baby ran past the shadows, shadow energy building up in his claws. He leaped up and on to Melody's shoulder, pointing to the roof.

Every shadow took notice.

Melody took her moment and bolted out the door. As she ran, she emptied her gun, looking at the dead clip. She tossed it into an open door as she passed, hoping the shadows wouldn't get a hold of it.

Baby sat on Melody's shoulders. The Valgon neared closer. Baby blasted its wing with dark energy, sending the flying shadow spiraling down. Baby fainted, falling backwards from the effort.

Melody caught the small shadow. They were nearing the lobby again, but the Valgon was nearing them. Her legs pumped harder, and she threw a wild shot over her shoulder.

Finally, Melody burst out into the street. She stumbled a moment, then turned and continued sprinting away from the building, holding onto Baby until they were a safe distance away. She stopped and slouched, hidden, behind a car. There was a stitch in her side, which she clung to after gently setting the small shadow on the ground.

Melody lay her head back, closing her eyes for a moment to calm down. That had been too close, and why hadn't her gun worked? It had been just fine yesterday.
